(14) Myra Marx Ferree 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자 Myra Marx Ferree 의 논문 ‘The Political Context of Rationality-Rational Choice Theory and Resource Mobilization’(1992)에서 문장을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “Olson's argument was that collective benefits alone would be insufficient to motivate a rational actor because free riding on the efforts of others would provide the same share of collective goods at less cost to the individual, and that a rational actor would expect his or her efforts to contribute only imperceptibly to provision of the collective good”라는 구절은 ‘now-familiar’을 생략하고, ‘free-riding’을 ‘free riding’로 바꾸고 ‘(by definition)’을 생략했을 뿐, Ferree 의 논문에 있는 구절과 57단어가 연쇄일치한다. 인용부호(“”)를 지워 타인의 문장을 자신의 문장인 것처럼 사칭하는 수법의 표절이다.

손석희의 논문에서 “the ability of resource mobilization to explain what social movements are and do.”라는 구절은 'RM'을 ‘resource mobilization’으로 풀어써주었을 뿐, 역시 Ferree 의 문헌에 있는 구절과 13단어가 연쇄일치한다. 역시 인용부호(“”)가 없다. Ferree 의 문장을 마치 자신의 창작 문장인 것처럼 사칭한 것이다.


(15) Jo Freeman의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 Jo Freeman 의 저술 ‘A Model for Analyzing the Strategic Options of Social Movement Organizations’(1979)와 ‘Social Movements of the Sixties and Seventies’(1983)에서 문장을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “the beneficiary constituency consists of political beneficiaries of the movement who also supply it with resources, and the conscience constituencies are those”라는 구절은 Freeman 의 저술에 있는 그것과 22단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희의 논문에서 “the need for a preexisting communication network or infrastructure within the social base of a movement is a primary prerequisite for spontaneous activity.”라는 구절은 Freeman 의 저술에 있는 그것과 23단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희의 논문에서 “if a movement is to spread rapidly, the communication network must already exist.”라는 구절은 Freeman 의 저술에 있는 그것과 13단어가 연쇄일치한다.

문장의 끝에 출처표기가 없거나, 또 가져온 문장 전체에 인용부호(“”)가 없으면 독자들은 이렇게 인용처리가 안된 문장 모두를 논문 저자가 창작한 생각이나 문장으로 받아들인다. 적절한 인용처리를 하지 않아 독자에게 이런 착각을 일으키게 하는 모든 행위는 표절에 해당한다.


(16) Doug McAdam, John D. Mccarthy, Mayer N. Zald 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자인 Doug McAdam, John D. Mccarthy, Mayer N. Zald 가 함께 집필한 저서 ‘Comparative Perspectives on Social Movements’(1996)에서 문장들을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “to break with grievance-based conceptions of social movements.”라는 구절은 9단어가 연쇄일치한다. “mobilization processes and the formal organizational manifestations of these processes”라는 구절은 10단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희의 논문에서 “the media are instrumental resources for social movements”라는 구절은 8단어가 연쇄일치한다. “media are important means of reaching the general public, acquiring approval, mobilizing potential participants,”라는 구절은 ‘to acquire’와 ‘to mobilize’를 각각 ‘acquiring’와 ‘mobilizing’로 변경했을 뿐 12단어가 연쇄일치한다.

인용부호(“”) 없이 여러 구절들을 McAdam, Mccarthy, Zald 의 문헌들에서 도용했음을 알 수 있다.


(17) Carol McClurg Mueller 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자인 Carol McClurg Mueller 의 문헌인 ‘Building Social Movement Theory’(1992)에서 문장들을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희 논문에서 “the resource mobilization paradigm brought a new life to social movement research in the 1970s.”라는 구절은 중간에 ‘new life’를 ‘a new life’로 변경했을 뿐 Mueller 문헌의 구절과 14단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희 논문에서 “The work of McCarthy and Zald (1973, 1977), Gamson (1968), Oberschall (1973), and Tilly (1978) offered a viable alternative to previous”라는 구절은 '1975'라는 연도표기만 생략되었을 뿐 Mueller 문헌의 구절과 21단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희 논문에서 “placed the weighing of costs and benefits, rather than deprivation and grievances, at the center of a theory of public goods”라는 구절은 중간에 콤마(,)가 두 군데 첨가된 것을 제외하고는 Mueller 의 문헌의 구절과 21단어가 연쇄일치한다.


(18) Neil Smelser 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자인 Neil Smelser 의 저서 ‘Theory of Collective Behavior’(1963)에서 문장을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “is not institutionalized behavior. According to the degree to which it becomes institutionalized, it loses its distinctive character”라는 구절은 Smelser 의 저서에 있는 구절과 18단어가 연쇄일치한다. 출처표시만 해주고 인용부호(“”)는 생략하는 방식으로 문장을 도용하는 표절이다.

손석희의 논문에서 “It is a behavior formed or forged to meet undefined or unstructured situations (Blumer, 1957:130).”라는 문장은 Smelser 의 저서에 있는 문장을 출처표시까지 그대로 베낀 ‘2차 문헌 표절(재인용표절)’이다.

특이한 점은 손석희가 Smelser 가 1차 문헌인 Blumer의 문장을 직접인용해 인용부호(“”)로 처리했던 구절인 ‘formed or forged to meet undefined or unstructured situations’를 원 인용부호(“”)까지 모두 삭제하면서 마치 손석희 자신의 문장인 것처럼 도용했다는 것이다.


(19) Hans Toch 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자인 Hans Toch 의 저서 ‘The Social Psychology of Social Movements’(1965)에서 문장들을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “are distinguished from other forms of collective behavior as being groups which are relatively long-lasting and have a clear program or purpose”라는 구절은 중간에 which를 생략했을 뿐 Hans Toch 저서의 구절과 23단어가 연쇄일치한다.

손석희의 논문에서 “a social movement represents an effort by a large number of people to solve collectively a problem that they feel they have in common”라는 구절은 Hans Toch 저서의 구절과 24단어가 연쇄일치한다. 출처만 언급해주고, 인용부호(“”)는 생략하는 방식으로 문장을 도용하였다.


(20) James A. Geschwender 의 문장을 표절한 혐의

손석희는 사회학자인 James A. Geschwender 의 논문 ‘Explorations in the Theory of Social Movements and Revolutions’(1968)에서 문장들을 베껴온 혐의가 있다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “the difference between desired and actual circumstances is what leads to revolutionary or protest activity.”라는 구절은 Geschwender 논문의 구절과 15단어가 연쇄일치한다. 출처표시도 인용부호(“”)도 전혀 없는 텍스트 표절이다.

손석희의 논문에서 “will likely attempt to reduce dissonance in one of two ways--they may attempt to bring about consonance through individual mobility, or if this is not possible and they shift to protest activities, it is likely to be in the direction of creating an equalitarian society in which rewards are based upon universalistic criteria, which culminate in a progressive or leftist movement.”라는 구절은 중간에 ‘or’를 삽입하고 ‘which culminate in’라는 표현을 추가한 것을 제외하면 Geschwender 논문의 구절과 58단어가 연쇄일치한다. 출처표시는 했으나 인용부호(“”)를 생략한 형태의 텍스트 표절이다.
 

손석희의 논문에서 “suggests that the Italian Fascist and German Nazi movements drew heavily from individuals who had undergone a decline in their objective economic position.”라는 구절이 Geschwender 논문의 구절과 23단어가 연쇄일치한다. 출처표시도 인용부호(“”)도 없는 텍스트 표절이다.
